Poetry Month: [How the owner] (Saigyō)

[poet’s note: When I was living in Saga, the wind would scatter plum blossoms from the monk’s lodging across the road.]

How the owner

must hate it

when the wind blows,

though over here, pure joy

in the fragance of the plum

–Saigyō, from Poems of a Mountain Home (trans Burton Watson)
