Thoughts on Yeats

I debated whether to include “The Second Coming.” It’s fairly well known, with influences outside of poetry. The last lines are quoted often in books, movies and TV shows. Lines from the poem serve as titles for other works.

One of my goals with Small Pond’s National Poetry Month celebration is to introduce you all to some poems you may not know. This one by Yeats doesn’t fit that goal for most of you.

On the other hand, I really like this poem. And that’s another goal of the monthlong series of posts: showcase my favorite poems or poets. “The Second Coming” definitely fits that.

What are your favorite uses of Yeats’ poem in other forms? For me, it’s the unexpected use of it to name a Batman limited series—Batman: The Widening Gyre. I also enjoyed the poem when it popped up on Babylon 5.

How about you?
